Cafe Rouge and Tesco vouchers

Just got back from an evening at Cafe Rouge. When the bill came we weren't allowed to use our Tesco vouchers because some of us had ordered the set menu.
I can see that the vouchers say they're not redeemable against the set menu. But there was plenty of food on our bill that wasn't from a set menu, including a starter, a steak and three desserts. The manager refused to use any of the vouchers against any of the food.
This seemed a bit of a technicality to me. Any similar experiences? Any thoughts? It was quite embarrassing because we were treating people and they ordered freely thinking that some of the cost was being covered by the vouchers. The total bill came to £96.
By coincidence, almost simultaneously the people next to us grew very angry about something - I'm not sure what the problem was but it seemed to be very serious and the manager was apologising - and left without paying. Which may be irrelevant but I'm left feeling that maybe the manager wasn't running things especially well.
