Hi
We have been with the AA for years and currently pay £185 per year for home start and general cover for 2 people (this was cheaper than 2 cars)
This is up for renewal in Jan.
My question is this, is the whole package worth while?
I might try and haggle a better discount is it worth it?

You may find the Breakdown Cover article useful:

You can haggle with all companies but there may be better options, such as Autoaid.0 -
If you dont want all the fripperies, ie home start, you can get it for as little as 20 quid.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
I didn't have home start this year and broke down at home a few weeks ago. They charged me a little over £50 to upgrade my membership there and then and send someone out. So if you know how to fix a flat tyre and the like yourself and don't think you'll have a real breakdown at home more than once every couple of years it's probably worth not bothering with homestart, and paying he extra if and when you have to call them out.0

Sista if you have a c/card available but if so - have a look at AutoAid http://www.autoaidbreakdown.co.uk/
£38 for the year - incl home start etc ..... reviews seem to suggest they pay out quickly if you do have a claimGrocery Challenge £211/£455 (01/01-31/03)
2016 Sell: £125/£250
£1,000 Emergency Fund Challenge #78 £3.96 / £1,000Vet Fund: £410.93 / £1,000
Debt free & determined to stay that way!0 -
Renewed our AA this year and haggled the price with repair cover to less than what we paid last year. Broke down the other day, what would have been a £400+ bill at a garage was fixed at the roadside and only cost me the £35 excess.0

They don't have their own vans, they use local repair agents. You pay the agent and then you claim the cost back from Autoaid.

Edit - there used to be reviews but not sure what MSE have done with that thread as it's not linked from the article anymore
