TV in children's bedroom?

My DDs have got a laptop (with parental controls) and Hifi in their bedroom, but no TV. DVDs can be played on their laptop.

We have two televisions downstairs so the family are not forced to watch the same programme all of the time.

As they are 11 and 15 they seem to be in the minority of their friends with no TV in their room. Are we being unfair not letting them have one?

I don't think so. My two older kids are 12 nearly 13, and 11 nearly 12 and don't have their own TVs nor will they until old enough to buy one for themselves.
  • No - not at all.
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.

Do the laptops have internet access? If so, TV catchup is amazing, it's all the channels you get on freeview online.

    its your parental choice.

I am considering buying a small tv for my sons room to play the wii when he is given permission only. he is only seven. I am considering it very carefully if he can be trusted to switch off when told and not to take liberties. Its really an issue of parental choice and understanding with children on what your rules/limitations are on it. I am goin second hand when I buy though - that way if the situation is not working and finding it to be a negative experience I will remove it.
  • I've not told them about TVcatchup and not sure the parental controls would allow - certainly doesn't let them load it on their iPods.
I prefer them not to spend their entire time at home in their bedrooms, which with TV in there I'm sure they would.

Personally I'd be more concerned about the internet if it were me (even with paental controls), there are only so many repeats of the Big Bang Theory that one can watch. They might even use it productively (ie. watching the news when getting ready in a morning).

My eldest DD(16) took the tv out of her room 2 years ago as she never watched it, She will watch things downstairs or on her laptop, but not very often TV on laptop - usually dvd's or VLOGS on youtube..

My youngest DD (13) is allowed to watch tv in my room until 9pm, she does have a tv that doesnt have an areial, she uses it for dvds, But at she has just become book mad, and has head in a book all the time..lol

My daughter is 12 and has a TV in her bedroom. BUT, there is no way i will allow her to use her laptop in her bedroom. I need to know what sites she's on and who she is speaking to. She watches TV in the morning whilst she gets ready for school and for an hour before she goes to sleep, there's never any argument about switching it off, she knows better !
