Voil insurance due to child with a criminal record

After having a small flood i contacted our insurance company to see if it was worth making a claim. First question asked was has any member of the family got any criminal convictions. I answered yes to this question and was told the insurance was void. 18 years of paying for worthless insurance.
The insurance was set up in the first place by an independent financial adviser. Him asking all the questions. At no time did he ask about criminal convictions. We signed and that was that. I know i should of read the policy but didn't. Over the years iv paid over £7000 in premiums for nothing. Iv been told we can have the policy voided but that would make getting further insurance difficult. The company wants us to cancel and walk away.
What should or what can i do.

conviction can become spent after a certain amount of time depending on the sentence.

Google Rehabilitation of Offenders, if it is spent then you are ok and insurer can't void the policy

Probably why swapping insurers every few years is a good thing.

All the questions get asked and any changes you didnt think about or forgot about get picked up.

Personally I would take this offer in a heartbeat rather than risk having a cancelled policy behind me.

Your complaint is really with the IFA, but from personal experience I am afraid to say you will not get very far complaining you were misadvised. If any records remain of the transaction, almost certainly one of the things you signed would say that you read and understood all the policy documents.

The voiding option may not help the situation.

    If;-
Have you or any of your family had insurance cancelled, declined or declared void?
is asked, the answer (and the result) will be the same.

    When was the conviction?

If the conviction is spent, and outwith the relevant timeframe, it is none of their business. However, be wary of them reporting it to the Insurance Hunter database, as this might cause problems later.

The important question. Along with the age of the individual at the time.

Until the OP answers your questions in post #2, we're in the dark.
