Lead Paint - Will liquid Sandpaper work?

Hi,

Our stairs are painted a horrible colour of gloss and we would like them white but it tested positive as there being lead in one of the layers so we know we can't sand it. Does anyone know if liquid sandpaper would work?

Just take the gloss off the top layer with a maroon 3M Scotch-Brite 7447 pad used wet.

or give it a coat of Zinsser 123 (waterbased) or BIN (shellac based) first. Both stick to anything and you can repaint straight over the top of either.

unless it hasn't been painted for 40 years the top coats are unlikely to have lead in them so i would have thought you could give these a light sand down without touching the lead based paints

It had carpet on so we've no idea when the top coat was painted.

Keystone: are these undercoats? Could we buy them at Brewers?

Yes you can get either at Brewers. Look on their webby under "Problem Solving Paints & Primers". Top of the list.

Update: thanks to Keystone's recommendation we got some Zinsser and painted one of our sets of stairs over the weekend, topcoating it with some white satin. We had already decorated the rest of the hallway all light, bright and fresh and were a bit annoyed that the dark green glossy stairs spoiled the look but now it looks fab so thank you all. Just got the second set of stairs now!!
