Advice on buying blinds

Hi everyone,

I usually post on the mortage free board as that is my main goal.

We bought this house as a doer upper a few years ago but due to financial probs we havent done much yet as we were scared we would have to move. Now this all seems to be behind us so we are beginning to think about decorating in the new year and I couldnt be more excited.

We have a conservatory with lots of windows and the current (hideous) blinds need to go. Because they are going on plastic we are limted on how they can be fixed and therefore seem to have limited choice on style.

Hillarys do roller blinds in just about the colours I want. Has anyone ever used them before? Are they expensive? Can anyone recommend anyone else (we are in the south) Any tips I shoudl know?

I have never bought blinds before and I feel so in the dark. Any advice would be really appreciated.

Thank you so much

Lily x

  • Are you going for roof blinds too?

    How big is the conservatory?

Two grand for an average sized one from that company. (Windows and roof)

I would also like feedback on Hillary's. I have a vague recollection of hearing negative comments but I can't remember when that was. I need a roller blind for my new kitchen.
  • I have just bought 10 venetion binds from web-blinds.com and they are a online company owned by Hilarys blinds. Blinds were great value for money, one was damaged when delivered and they sent another out immediately and even refunded the fee for quick delivery due to the damage. I couldn't afford Hiliarys blinds and even had a rep out to measure up and when I asked him to match web blinds price he said he couldn't. I've had the blinds about two months now and I'm still happy with my purchase.
  • Hillary's are expensive as you will find and their customer service is awful (experience not opinion, check their Facebook and Twitter pages to see the extent of customer complaints.). I have heard a lot of people mention Harmony Blinds, they have shops and agents down South. Their websites are simple and informative too.

I think £500 for 10 blinds is too cheap, if you want good quality blinds, you should expect to pay a bit more. I think it depends on the type of blind you want, and what you want it for.

Have you thought about fitting 'window film'

We have a Conservatory that is about 45sqm and during the summer it was so hot that it became very uncomfortable to live in.

We contacted several companies that sold blinds and would fit them for us, but the price was outwith our reach so we sttled for 'window film' which would - Reduce Glare - Cut uv and infra-red rays - Reduce heat transfer.

I fitted the film myself and it really has cured all the problems that we had originally at a fraction the cost of blinds.

My wife did not like the idea of blinds being fitted that would gather dust and as she says 'creepy crawlies' spiders in otherwords.

Check out their site from this web address.
