car insurance-confused

Hi all,
i wonder whether someone might be able to advice me about a car insurance policy.
i want to transfer the ownership of my car to my brother but i still want to keep the car and be the only regular driver. Does that make me the 'keeper, and my brother the'owner'. Does my insurance policy need changing?how will my policy or myself be affected.
i would much appreciate if someone could help me to find some answers.

Most insurers ask that one person is the owner AND registered keeper, as well as the most regular driver, to stop something known as 'fronting' which is insuring a car in one persons name but giving regular usage to another, higher risk driver. Classic case is young people named drivers on their parents policy, but the young person uses the car more than the parent.
My understanding was the insurance company wouldn't care who the RK was (that's the person in whose name the car is registered, who gets the fine if it's not taxed etc), or that it was different from the Owner. What they care about is the situation you describe: they want to know who the main driver is.

If you really are the main driver, and your brother is a named driver, that's fine, but expect to pay a hefty premium for your brother even if he's really not the main driver. And expect an argument with the insurance co. if he has a string of accidents in the car!

BTW, I'm about to be unable to drive for a few months post-operatively, and the car is insured in my name. Direct Line have told me there is no problem with naming my DH as main driver for this year. But to add our son - learner driver, 17 - will cost about £1000 for 6 months.

The other problem I once had was when the insurance was in my name but my DH was RK and not named as a driver on the insurance. Post Office queried it but let it pass. After that I always had my name on the registration document and his name on the insurance!
