Advice: Bathroom tiles or paint it? And extractor fans

Hi,
2 questions for you lovely people
We are doing our bathroom out and atm it has half/half (paint/tiles). Now we were thinking of tiling it all. But a friend said it will look cold and have no where for the steam to go as its a closed space.
Now what are peoples opinions on this. Yes we will tile the splash areas but not sure about the rest.
Also we are going to drop the ceiling and install insulation. And then re skim new ceiling etc.
Now it already has an extractor fan but its on the other side of the room. Can an extractor fan be installed directly above the shower and then vented outside on a flat roof?
Can it do directly above so comes through the roof or can it take a 90 degree bend and go through the facia/soffit boards and also through the joist?
Any help would be great

We have tiles on every surface except for the ceiling and much though I love the cleanliness of tiles I wish we didn't. I'd go either for tiles up to a certain point except in direct water areas or tiles covering the walls in 'wet' areas and no tiling on dry area walls, depending on the layout.
That said, we live in a Victorian house and have no extractor fan (there's a large window that we open for a few minutes after a steamy shower which clears the room) but don't really get any tangible problems from all the tiles, it's just I feel they look a bit cold and clinical.0 -
Building Regs require an extract fan to be fitted for a bathroom refurb.
Yes you can fit one over the shower and duct it over the top to vent via the soffit. What does "though the joist" mean? Make sure you use a coaxial fan in the duct and make sure its powerful enough for the length of duct.
The tiling is down to personal preference. I prefer floor to ceiling myself and it doesn't have to look cold and clinical.

I love my floor to ceiling tiles. White and broken with a border. We have an extractor above our shower - and goes through duct area in the loft.0

My old flat had floor to ceiling tiles in the bathroom when I moved in.
And by the time I left, a serious mould problem. Nothing worked. It must have cost the landlord a fortune.I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll0 -
Our bathroom is tiled above the bath, to the ceiling, and the wall with the basin and toilet on is half-tiled. We have one full wall with no furniture against it and that's painted. Would have substantially increased our tiling bill to tile that too.
I like the mixture of paint and tiles personally. We have dark brown floor tiles, lighter wall tiles (same range - sort of a dark beige colour), and then cream walls in a cream that tones with the browns. So we have light-mid-dark colours. With our tiles I think a full room of them would look a bit much.
As others have said though, depends on the look you prefer. I stayed in a hotel room this weekend where the bathroom walls were completely covered in black sparkly tiles!0 -

My bath room is completely tiled and also does not have a window. However it it does have a fan which comes on when the light is on and stays on for a few minutes after the light goes off. I can honestly say that there is never any condensation on the walls. Well, possibly a slight mist on the mirror. In the previous house that I built, the bathroom had a window but no fan. The walls literally ran with water during the winter months. It is the fan that made the difference.I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.0 -
I've just been looking at fans today. Intend to use the now defunct ceiling rose hole, and vent through sofits also. I'm quite taken with the type that actually goes in the loft, ducting to, then from, rather than ceiling mounted fan. Small, fully tiled bathroom. Is there a minimum flow I should be looking at? Also not sure yet how to power it, separate switch, or in conjunction with lights. Wouldn't always need to be on really, just for bath/shower, or those annoying nasty nifs...0

If you will remember to turn it on when you have a bath/shower, then probably best to get one which is independent of the lights otherwise it will come on when not needed. You can also get fans with humidistats.0
