Any motorcycle instructors? - Advice needed.
Hi all.
For years I have thought about getting my motorcycle licence, but never had the money.
A friend of mine used to work as a motorcycle instructor. He has said that if I had my own bike and appropriate insurance, It would be legal for me to go out with him.
Can anyone confirm this? I have no idea if instructors need to be officially "working" or pay yealry fees so not sure if this would be ok or not. I would ask him but dont want to offend him or his kind offer.
Cheers.

Thanks for that. I'll have a read through now.
Ive just had a thought.
When learning to drive a car, you dont need an instructor with you, just someone who has a full licence (for 3 years or something) and relevant insurance. So would this be the same with bikes?0 -
With bikes it is a little different - once you have passed your CBT (about a day's worth of training to get to grips with the basics) you can ride entirely on your own on a 125cc motorbike limited to 14.6bhp, with L-plates, no pillion passenger allowed and not allowed on motorways.
For riding a bigger bike (ready for the direct access test) you need to be with a current DAS registered instructor and there must be radio communication although I can't find the exact rules for this so I may not be right.

AFAIK you are right, also seem to remember something about wearing one of the instructors yellow bibs (has to have the name of the school on it)0 -
Thanks for the help.
I'll have to look into this further, just for clarification.
Maybe i'll have to get something smaller than i had intended to start with. Lessons are way too expensive to go through right now.0 -
Yes it is true and I done it
prepare for some information!! Ready.... Go!!
Well first off is doing your CBT (Compulsary Basic Training)
This is about £100 on average and is just a day safety course. its a full day and you are provided with the bike, and safety gear. They teach you road awareness, handling and what not. Im putting my girlfriend on one just for the amazing free experience of biking. Never know may convert her to a biker chick.. Back on subject
This CBT once passed means you can ride a 125cc bike for 2 years on your own (as long as vehicle legal insured, taxed, MOT etc.) normal stuff...
So Now you have your CBT and you want something bigger!! I don't know about DAS (Direct access) this is where you are over 21 and if you pass you can ride a very big bike instantly! Anything over 125. But my way i know is called an A2 (full motorbike license but you are restricted in the size of the bike you can ride for 2 years - then after thios period it is a unrestricted full licence).
So first off is booking your theory which can be done here: https://www.gov.uk/book-a-driving-theory-test for £31 of your own accord.
Next is the MOD 1 which can be booked directly yourself for £15.50 on a weekday here: https://www.gov.uk/book-practical-driving-test. The mod 1 basically consists of you in a car park and it lasts 5-10 minutes just showing you have good control of the bike such as emergency stop, slalom, figure of 8 etc. A bit of training from a fellow biker like your instructor will ensure you pass!
Next and finally is your MOD 2 which again you can book yourself here: https://www.gov.uk/book-practical-driving-test. This is 45 minutes on the road with the examiner behind you. Follow all the rules. do the lifesavers! Follow his directions and you will pass with flying colors!! Get your friend if possible to give you guidance a good few hours practicing riding behind you to iron out your creases. I would say it's common sense and if you don't let the nerves get to you you'll rock!
I done mine this way. No need for a instructor or school saved £££'s just a few hours with my friends thats it!
So £31 theory + £15.50 MOD 1 + £75 MOD 2 (*£88.50 if booked on a weekend) = £91.50 for your full license!! (don't forget this is using your own road legal bike and after CBT) so could say £191.50 including CBT :T
OH!!!!! And a few pints for your helping mates!
Any questions feel free to Ask!

Well i do intendd to move onto larger bikes as i would like to go around parts of europe, but that would certainly get me started!
Many thnaks for your help, greatly appreciated. Your information may have just made this all the more likely to happen now! :T
I'll start looking for test centers in my area, after i get my licence updated (still using the old paper version).

Yep! Can do it all on a 125cc and without the need to pay literally hundreds to instructors to pass. It's a common misconception that people can't do it themselves but they can!
The good thing is while your training you have use of the 125 to plod around onGo and do it! I can't explain the thrill, freedom and excitement plus conveniece of biking! Now go and get that paper version sorted!!! Get a nice photo licence
