Do we have to upgrade Nintendo DS Lite to 3DS..?

Options
Hi,
I was hoping for some advise... Bought DS a DS Lite a few years ago, and have built up quite a collection of games over the years, but now he really wants FIFA 13, and as far as I can tell it's only available on 3DS. Is this a sign of what's to come - will DS Lite become obsolete, so I should invest in a DSi or 3DS for him...? If I do - will his old games still work in the new console?
I'm not very clued up, thanks to anyone who can clear the confusion!
I don't think I can hang on til Friday...

Not all games manufacturers have jumped on the 3DS bandwagon. Gamefreak, the makers of the Pokemon series of games have said they have no plans to develop a 3D Pokemon game for the console.

Yes, his old games will work in a 3DS.

If you're considering buying a 3DS check out the 3DS XL too, it is more expensive but offers an improved battery life between charges than the 3DS and has bigger screens. Be warned though, the 3DS XL doesn't include a charger so to avoid disappointment if you buy one remember to order a charger at the same time.
  • Oh excellent - thank you so much for replying! In your personal opinion is the 3DS worth it, or is it likely to be a "fad"...?
And regarding the charger - is it a different one than the one for the DS lite?

As you say, more and more games are coming out on this platform. Don't forget you can turn the 3D effect off altogether, in fact Nintendo recommend this for younger gamers. We had a few problems with our 3DS which had only just come out at the time. Nintendo have probably cured the teething troubles now but that's the price of being an "early adopter". We had a refund and waited until the 3DS XL came out, but it was worth the wait IMO.

You should get a charger with a 3DS but Nintendo in their wisdom saw fit to leave it out of the 3DS XL package in the UK and Europe. Some stores were giving the chargers away if you bought a 3DS XL when it was launched, I doubt they'd still do this but I might be wrong. The "official" charger is different from the DS Lite but you can also use a DSi charger, if you have one, or buy a third party one. You don't need a charging cradle, BTW.
  • Hmm, food for thought... Will have a think & see what we'll decide on! Thank you so much for your reply!
