What is the best way to dry clothes?

Ok following in on from another thread I've been reading on keeping on top of the washing, I didn't want to hijack the thread.
Apart from the obvious line drying what is the best way?
We are a family of 5 2 adults 1 teenager and 2 girls.
Currently I have a vented tumble which is in the garage so not ideal in this weather so I dry most of the clothes on the radiators which I hate, apart from being unsightly and expensive I'm worried about condensation and damp. So any suggestions would be greatly appreciated
Thanks Silver

Sorry should of explained myself better the tumble is in the garage which is a fair distance from the house and I hate going down in the rain.

What do you do with the things that can't be tumbled?

  • I do try not to wash clothes unless they need to be done. It would be interesting to see how many loads everyone else does. I've done 3 this morning just from the weekend.

  • Let me get this straight ... you get a tumble dryer to dry your clothes when it rains, the best place to put it is in the garage, but when it rains you don't want to use it because it means you have to go out in the rain to get to the tumble dryer.

When it's dry and sunny, the washing hangs on the line so there's no need to use the dryer.

    Sorry, I'm confused.

Could you get one of these

I have an airing cupboard that I hang the bits in that can't be tumbled (jeans, lycra running bottoms etc)

oh duh i never thought of that despite me not wanting mine in shed for same reason :rotfl:

i dont tumble most of my clothes so tend to wait for a day i think they will at least dry a little outside then put them in a room with dehumidifier overnight to finish them..we get damp and condensation and ive found this is best i can do..without shrinking my clothes

Are you at home during the day? If the weathers dry (and l'm at home) mine goes out regardless, it does dry alot quicker when it's on the airer even though l might not think it's done much good when l get it in.

I only have one child though, so you obviously have more washing to get dry.

I think you're options are to find somewhere to put the tumble drier in the house to save your trips up and down the garden. Or invest in a standing airer by a raidiator (if you've not got one) If you've got space, Ikea had a hanging airer a few years ago, maybe they still do them? It was only about £15

Counting it up l do 8 loads a week...... darks, brights, my 6yo's non bio darks, his non-bio whites, 2 loads of towels and 2 lots of bedding.

    Happy moneysaving all.

I have an airer which i put in the bathroom

If its a jumper that I cant tumble dry I hang it on a coat hanger and hang it on the curtain pole in the back bedroom above the radiator so that it dries but no one can see my washing lol

Washing loads - usually around 6 a week (One wash is purely bedding / towels - 2 washes are DD's nappies and rest are clothes) but then i have two young children who are forever covered in paint / goo from school/nursery lol

Do you put a car in the garage? If not, is there room to put either a line or a hanging airer in there?

Oh, and buy an umbrella or put a waterproof jacket on! I have to to put any washing on when it's raining as both washer & dryer (and freezer) are in our outhouse!
