I will not call anybody with just a mobile number because of the cost to me. Exception is our DDs, who we just leave a missed call for them to call us back. Of course if it was something urgent we'd just call and let them answer - then moan about the cost later. ;)
The other issue is that of discipline. If you're driving and your mobile rings with a call from your beloved, do you answer it or ignore it and call back later? Too many people will just answer it, even if only to say "I'm driving, I'll call you later." Then follows the impact....

    Can't you use
    a. a mobile contract which gives you free calls to both landlines and mobiles ?
    b. a hands free set to reduce the risk(and increase the legality) of answering in the car?

Don't have a mobile on contract. Not everybody does! :)

Of course they could. If everyone did you would never see anybody holding a mobile to their ear while driving....
Why should I go to the trouble and expense to make life easier for others??

The mobile phone aspect doesn't worry me at all, we both have enough minutes on the contract to make the calls we need to, and its not an all singing all dancing package and price, but it covers our needs.

All our children (2 left home) have and pay for their own phones and always contact us on mobiles, The only people that we want calls from are our parents who ring our landline, but that can be solved with a missed call and we will ring them back. Most of our incoming calls to the landline are from Sales people, even though we are registered with TPS. We hardly ever use the home phone to ring out.

Just as another note, I have had a mobile phone for about 7 years and I have NEVER answered my phone in the car, the consequences don't bear thinking about!! It wouldn't be worth getting a hands free kit, for the amount of driving I do.

We will look into the tv package to see what we actually watch as Freeview etc may be the way forward. I just had it in my head that there was some stigma attached to people not having a home phone number

Thankyou for everyones advice and I have taken it on board.

It does help having one,and thats easily solveable. Free geographic number from www.sipgate.co.uk pointed at voicemail . Then message will be sent to you by e-mail. Free of all charge.

But if you dont take up the expensive virgin media only broadband, your have a landline anyway will you not to deliver your broadband.:D

Not posted on here for ages, but would like some advice please.
Looking at where we can make savings in our regular bills, and we are with Virgin for our home phone, broadband and tv package. We are looking at downgrading the tv package, but the conversation of 'Do we need a home phone' came up last night, we don't use it to make outgoing calls, and family etc can get in touch with us on our mobiles.
Is there a down side to not having a home phone number ????

Now a days online shopping is much batter so you can go there and search how types you like most and order.
    Thanks.

if you plan on sticking with virgin there's little to no benefit to cancelling phone line (maybe £3 month) since all bundle prices are based on having a landline with them
When will the "Edit" and "Quote" button get fixed on the mobile web interface?

Are you planning on taking out a mortgage? I have read on here that it can make a marginal difference to credit checks by the lenders.
