Spain gives residency permits for foreign house buyers

Options
"In a further attempt to boost the housing market, the trade ministry said on Monday that it would offer residency permits to foreigners who buy houses for more than 160,000 euros.

The initiative is aimed at Chinese and Russian buyers in particular, according to the ministry. There is an overhang of 700,000 unsold properties in Spain."

Why would you want to live in a country that is rapidly devolving into a third world state?
  • Doesnt it then allow you to freely move to other parts of the EU?

We are thinking of eventually living there between November and April to get away from our winter weather as I like to spend a fair amount of time outdoors (jogging, cycling, walking, bowls and possibly getting back into tennis). I can't really see myself enjoying my retirement in the UK during the winter months. It isn't impossible that we might eventually consider living there all year round rather than betwen two homes.

Cyprus (Greek part) has been doing something similar since it joined the EU.

But if you are from a non EU country and want to work live in an EU country this is a cheap way in.

Buy a house in Spain if you are Chinese, Indian, etc and you can work/live anywhere in the EU including the UK.

This is a very clever idea from the Spanish government they will improve the housing market in Spain and probably have few people who actually stay and need state support!

Are residency permits transferable if you are non-EU citizen?

If you can afford 160000 euros and costs etc perhaps they wouldn't need state support?

What does 160 k euro buy in Spain. Both in the major towns and on the "costas" - I cannot see a Russian ma ff ia or Chinese triad parvenu member wanting to live in the countryside.

Ireland and Portugal already have similar arrangements, as does Switzerland and the little tax haven states of Europe. They however are after the independently wealthy seeking a secure alternative to their mother/father land.
