Card Payment Terminal Set up GPRS Mobile Chip & Pin

Hi,
I am hoping that someone can help. I am about to launch a new business and have been looking at credit/debit card payment facilities.

I have found that renting the units as a package from streamline or evalon is very expensive. Even more so because I will need a mobile terminal as it is a mobile business.

I have been offered a used Verifone VX670 unit from a retired friend (reliable source). I have a good deal lined up with streamline for the merchant account. What is causing the problem is the 'middle man' .
I have been offered a deal for £100 for software load and then vodafone sim card for unlimited transactions for £15 a month.

So many of these companies have cancellation fees and hidden fees that I feel it is a rip off.

The other option is to ask clients to pay via paypal, but my hubby thinks that this look unprofessional. I think that it is a cheap and easy problem to a solution.

Advice please

I take payments through my phone. I have a card reader attachment that connects to the bottom of the phone, and then the customer can either use the keypad to put the pin in or sign on the screen (using a stylus). The company I use is called iZettle https://www.izettle.com/gb?gclid=CJfFm6nK3rMCFUbKtAodTnoA9g

They can be slightly expensive at 2.75% per transaction, but its a whole lot easier with no monthly hiring fees for equipment, no set up charges, contracts etc. They even sent the free card reader to me too, although you dont have to use it if you dont want. In fact I think they now charge for it, though not too sure how much.....

Theres an alternative too, though I have no personal experience of it - http://www.mpowa.com/index.html

    Good Luck

If you are talking about a brick and mortar shop, or market stall, paypal would be inappropriate. If you are an online store, Paypal would be adequate to start with, as customers don't need to open an account to pay with Paypal. For a mobile service (e.g. hairdresser) a mobile unit is probably the best solution for you.

If you don't deal with customers face to face, there are facilities for taking payments over the phone (paypal offers one, but I'm sure other merchants do as well), and I believe it's cheaper than renting a mobile unit.
  • we just signed up to izettle cos it free and l love gadgets :D

  • The general consensus with people I have asked it that if someone had a gadget stuck to a mobile phone and asked me to put my card into and enter my pin, then I may feel its potentially unsafe and look unprofessional.

iZettle doesn't use the offline PIN CVM (cardholder verification method) because the use of the phone screen as the PIN entry device is not EMV certified. For MasterCard and AMEX, it uses Chip and Signature. However, Visa does not allow this and they have to use a work-arround where the customer is sent a text message and directed to a secure website to complete the transaction. If the customer wants to pay with Visa and doesn't have a smartphone, then I guess you're screwed.

iZettle does look interesting, but its not quite there because of the EMV certification issues and the Visa workaround. It does have very low entry costs though, so for people like small market traders its probably very handy.
The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser people so full of doubts.
