When you turned the ignition on before starting the car, did the lights come on in the instrument panel?

If you turn the ignition on and no lights come on at the instrument panel means that there is no power coming from the battery. It could be a dead battery or often a bad ignition switch could cause this.

Turn the headlights on, if they work, means the battery has power, so the problem could be with the ignition switch or wiring between the ignition switch and battery.

If no lights coming on in the dash the battery could be completely dead or there is no connection between the battery and the vehicle electrical system. You can try to jump start your car; if it's a dead battery, jump starting can help.

Ally - there were no lights at all, not even the handbrake light etc. It's not the battery because after a few tries and jiggling the key about/pulling in/out it started fine and all the lights came on. I'm thinking loose wire connecting the ignition barrel to the elelctrics in the car. There is def a loose wire on in the indicator stick too because sometimes the ticker comes on very fast for no reason (but the light doesn't, just the tick noise)

    Two problems:

FAILURE TO START: So the problem could be with the ignition switch or wiring between the ignition switch and battery. Could just be moisture with all this weather we're having.

INDICATOR TOO FAST: With the indicator the connection to the bulbs should have a earth and this some times gets eroded with the damp/wet connections. Bulbs flash too fast if they are drawing more current than they should. The most likely thing is that your socket is corroded to the point that you have a short. This may get worse in wet weather for example, causing the bulb to stop working altogether. What's probably happening is that the electricity is getting past the bulb instead of going through it. Electricity will always take the path of least resistance. This makes it so that it is using more electricity than usual, which makes the flasher go faster.

    SOLUTIONS:
~You could try putting cooking salt or cat litter in a handkerchief and sealing it with a rubber band. Tie on a piece of string and hang off your indicator stick for an instant moisture trap.
~If you can get at the corroded part you could scrub the rust-coloured gunk off with a nail file or emery board to restore the connection.
~If you need to buy a replacement indicator unit these can be costly. Try an online breakers' yard like BY.

    Evening all,

Thanks for starting us off DNMS.

A late post from me as my lunch break got eaten up by important things, & this evening seems to have run away with me as well! I'm in a good mood though as I passed my TKD grading yesterday, very MSE as it would be another £30 to do it again! My last minute revision clearly paid off :j We also have new neighbours & so far so good! Fingers crossed it stays that way.

    Today I have/will:-
    • Made use of free water & milk at work
    • Food from stores
    • Did my first mystery shop on my lunch break
    • Dinner from meal plan - HM spag bol, used a big pack of mince & have frozen half of it, cheapo & healthy ready meal for another day now!
    • Charged phone at work
    • Heating off - not needed it at all today :j
    • Daily clicks etc on Sw@gbucks
    • Log calories using free app
    • Check online banking
    • Surveys
    • Declutter & flylady
    • Completed my mystery shopping assignment, & checked for new ones
    • Used x2 10p off a litre of petrol vouchers from items we would have bought anyway, saving nearly £10
    • Enter some comps
    • Thinking about what to get people for Xmas & how best to stick to my budget for DH...Need to email some family members who have asked what they can get him, if I know he's getting what he wants from them too I won't feel the need to spend so much on him!
    • Need to update grocery challenge still...
    • Washing on eco setting using less than the recommended dose of washing liquid
    • Hang up to dry
Have a great, MSE day everyone x
