Reclaim bank charges from nationwide??

I would be grateful for as much help as possible. I recently contacted nationwide to get my statements which they told me was £10each but with this sites help I got all the statements for £10 in total so thanks for that. There are so many statements I have literally gone through all charges. From December 2001 until present my charges have been the following: unauthorised overdraft fees £827.50, interest charges £931.68, unpaid diret debit fees £840 and paid item fees of £705. I can't believe how much these all add up to but unsure what I can even try to reclaim, they constantly I have given me overdrafts (there are all on my visa debit card) the largest overdrafts I have had was £2020 which in may this year I had to lift all my child's savings to clear back to £300. I really should have done something about this before now. I don't understand why when I go 1p over an overdraft banks continue to allow money to come out of your account which is the main reason for a lot of these charges, can anyone help me and advice me on my way forward I am a single parent of two kids my income is about 1350 per month although it hasn't always been this and I do get some tax credits I don't understand why I was ever allowed an overdraft at the highest amount my monthly income meant I could NEVER get back towards £0 until they told me they were taking this off me this year and only because I had my kids savings accounts I would never have been able to clear this at all!! Help please

Why do you think you will be able to claim any of the fees back ? The courts ruled in favour of the banks back in 2009 so unless you can prove that the fees were wrongly charged you won't have a claim really. Claims for financial hardship need to be submitted at the time of hardship, not years later. You could contact Nationwide but i don't feel you will get anywhere.0

Ok. Thank you for your reply the financial hardship has been ongoing but is particular this year and from reading on this site it doesn't have to be claimed t time of hardship it can relate to a time when there was financial hardship. Also these charges are from December 2001 to today so I am also not sure if they did vote in favour is there a period where I can /cannot reclaim?0

Financial hardship applies to now. Not historic. Also these charges are from December 2001 to today so I am also not sure if they did vote in favour is there a period where I can /cannot reclaim?
There is no period. It is all down to the goodwill of the bank. If you put a strong enough case together they will consider it. Typically by looking at your current spending habits, current arrears/defaults etc.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). The comments I make are just my opinion and are for discussion purposes only. They are not financial advice and you should not treat them as such. If you feel an area discussed may be relevant to you, then please seek advice from an Independent Financial Adviser local to you.0 -

Financial hardship claims are looked at in great detail, what you were spending, what direct debits and regular payments you had etc. If you were spending on anything other than essentials, your claim will probably be rejected. Check back through your statements to see what your outgoings were for. Trying to claim financial hardship for the last 11 years won't wash i'm afraid, what efforts did you make to discuss the amount of the fees at the time they were charged ? You might get away with recent charges if it is truly financial hardship.
To find out whether Nationwide will refund anything, you'll need to submit a claim and wait for a response. Better to assume that you won't get anything, then if you do it's a bonus !0
