Help needed -Putting Office 2010 on computer that has office xp on it

Hi
I have a computer that is running xp and it also has Office XP on it. I bought Office 2010 when it was on offer as daughter uses that at school and it had publisher on it, I did a search in tese forums so I think I am right in saying from those posts that I just need to insert cd that came and install it and it will override the xp version, but what happens to the files that are already on the computer, is it a case that when I next open a file it will open it in Office 2010, and then save it in that version when I close it. I really don't need to have xp still on there as well.Or is it best to uninstall office xp first?
When I install Office 2010 do I need to do anything specific , I have already installed it on the laptop very easily but it had no offic suite installed on it anyway to complicate matters.

Any other advice on how to install it gratefully received

Normally documents n their own folder are safe, but copy your work off first if you are unsure.

think this is going to get messy. install one of the two. You will have to uninstall one completely to get the other working

The problem with this is that they share dll and these will be of different versions, often with the same name, and registry will probably be different too

If you have already installed it on a laptop, and it is a single license version you will not be allowed to activate it, you would have to buy another license. If it was installed more than 120 days ago and activated, it may activate but any updates could warn that the older laptop install does not have a genuine copy and "may" prevent saving your work.

You need to check the license conditions.

If Office XP works as you want then there is no real need to update.

If you cannot open .docx in Office XP, then you need to download the
Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint File Formats.

I can install it on 3 computers the licence says so that's not a problem, personally I like xp but because my daughter uses office 2010 at school and this has publisher that she needs to use it for school work and my office xp doesn't have it - that's the main reason I want to change to office 2010

I am just worried if I uninstall office xp and then install office 2010 i won't be able to open the files that are saved in office xp. And I can't then reinstall office xp as the licence has been used up on that disc.

Maybe I'm worrying about nothing but not being techie I don't want to have a disaster!

i've had product problems in the past with ms. office was funny when you swap different revisions of the same version.

Use magicaljellybean and get the serial nos before installing

Files are not 'saved' anywhere in Office XP. They are saved in My Documents, or whatever default folder you set. Removing Office XP will not delete Word or Excel files etc-you just won't be able to open them until you install Office 2010.
All files with the suffix .doc or .xls will open in Office 2010.
New files in Office 2010 will be created as .docx or .xlsx unless you alter the default settings.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Thanks I realised they weren't saved in office xp I meant I was worried if I uninstalled office xp I wouldn't be able to open my excel files once I had installed office 2010. I told you I wasn't techincally minded ;) I know what I meant, so will uninstall office xp then install office 2010 nd keep everything crossed:D

Word and Excel are backward compatible. Office 2010 will open older files in .doc or .xls just fine.
And older versions of Office will open .docx or .xlsx files once you install the Office 2010 Compatibility Pack.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
