PS2 Problem

Our PS2 has packed up. It was making some strange noises for a bit but now just won't play anything. Anyone any idea what it may be? thanks.

do you get a clicking noise like when u grind the gears on a car?
it could be the laser arm. they are about £3 on ebay to replace.
but with ps2's could also be a number of other things too
