please help advice needed

Hi,
Can anybody give any advice.
My sister & her husband have recently purchased a house ( about 8 months ago).
Its a fairly high mortgage. Shortly after moving in she found a lump in her breast & found it to a aggressive cancer,she is currenly receiving chemotherapy . Her husband meanwhile has had a major breakdown and his not expected to return to work for some time.
The only benefits they are getting are his statuary sick pay & a bit of family credit( because he used to earn quite good money). they have been told they will not receive help with the mortgage for some time & she has been turned down for disabilty money( I think thats what its called).They also have a 4 year old child.
What other benifits should they claim.............

Did she apply for DLA (Disability Living Allowance)? If the cancer could be life threatening she should be able to claim that immediately under the special rules.
Tax credits may be increased if their income for this tax year will be lower than last year so that could help too.0
