Mis-sold credit card?

in Credit cards
I opened up a student account with Natwest in 2009 to get the free railcard, and I was told at the time I could only get this student account and free railcard if I also signed up to the credit card and savings account, which I did.
I've used the card on and off for the past three years, never managing to meet the repayments properly as my student loan doesn't really cover it. I have now been maxed out on the card (£500) for around six months and I just don't have the money to pay it off as I'm a student, and I keep getting charged every month. It has got to the stage now where I'm getting emails and letters from debt collectors.
Was I mis-sold this credit card and can I get them to cancel the debt? I was told I had to sign up for it, whereas I know plenty of other students who didn't and weren't told this. Also is there any way to rectify my credit rating?
Any advice would be a big help! Thank you.

Did they make you use it?0

You might have been told that you had to sign up for the card. But you were not told that you had to use it. That was entirely your choice.I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.0 -
No, they didn't make me use it. But I'm wondering if making a 19 sign up for a credit card they didn't want counts as it being mis-sold, as I stated at the time I didn't want it.0

Just to clarify, I didn't actually have to sign up for the card, but the person who signed me up to the account told me I did.0

At 19 you are considered adult enough to look after your own finances.
You could have signed up for the credit card and then destroyed it.
There is no mis-sell here, you owe the debt so you'll need to pay it.0 -
Totally agreed. How can you claim you were mis-sold this card. Firstly, once receiving the card, you could have put it in the cupboard and waited for the freebies to arrive then cancel. What have you bought on the credit card? And how would you have bought these things if the credit card wasn't available?
If however, you were auto enrolled for PPI on the credit card, then that is another matter, and you should check your statements to see if this is the case. But if the only reason you've accrued these debts is because you've gone shopping and not had enough money to pay the bill afterwards, then I don't see why this could be classed as mis-selling.0 -
OP I suggest you have too much time on your hands - how about getting a xmas job to earn enough to pay the debt off?
Even if they did mis-sell they did not spend one penny on it - please grow up and accept the consequence of using credit.0 -

You don't pay anything merely to be signed up to a credit card.
Therefore it wasn't sold.
Therefore it wasn't mis-sold.0 -

I doubt that they did tbh as my dd had the same account and had to ask for the cc,if you didnt need it you should have sent it back,by not doing and then using it means you dont have a leg to stand on0
