Advice?

Hi everyone. I was hoping someone could give me a bit of advice.

My dad was on Income Support supposed to go on Invalidity (I think) due to him having an accident (he was attacked) and he has never been quite right since.

He also went to pieces after my grandad and my uncle passed away within a month of each other.

Anyway, I didn't realise how bad things had got. I suspenct he's now an alcoholic and I also think he may be depressed but anyway:

The Housing Association are owed £1100 in rent arrears because my dad hasn't filled in any forms and they've stopped his housing benefit.

I'm going with him tomorrow to sort things out but I've been told me might not be able to get the housing benefit backdated unless he has a good excuse.

Giving his circumstances would you say he had a chance?

Thanks :)

It might be an idea to get him to the GP for a diagnosis and help... sounds like he could be depressed and that along with the alcoholism would be good reason for him not 'bothering' with form filling.. but they might want his GP to confirm this.... good luck I hope he gets better soon...

Thanks tanith. Yeah I was thinking of arranging for an appointment with the doctor. It's just I didn't realise how bad things had got and the HA are threatening court if he doesn't get it sorted out so I'm going to arrange things tomorrow. I'm really the only person who can help him but I have uni and exams coming up along wigth everything else too.

    Thanks :)

If you tell them what he has endured as you have stated here surely it is a very good 'excuse' to why he hasn't filled in their forms, these are genuine reasons, surely they should accept this and be willing to get the housing benefit backdated. He has been attacked and since then lost his father and his brother - he is grieving.

I agree he should see a doctor, and it may also help if you send a letter to the HA explaining the situation and the reasons behind it, it couldn't do any harm.

Hope things work out for you and good luck with your exams.
