He was referred by the job centre, and his interview was over 2 days 2 hours for each session, with a lot of waiting around too

That's probably it then, that he didn't do the online assessment so they did it in person. I did it online, where it asked you loads of questions and they tell you immediately after if you've been successful then it gives you the option to book an interview for whichever store is hiring.

I actually did my assessment a couple of weeks ago but by the time I finished it the store i wanted to apply to had removed their vacancies so I left it because there were no others close to me.

Checked back today on a whim and another local store came up so I booked the interview. All in all I can't fault them for their application process.
  • I had one a few weeks ago, I had to do a role play about a sofa that the customer wanted which is now out of stock and the manager is out. Then I had a half an hour interview with someone else who asked me about my experience and the hours I wanted. I was rejected because they didn't want to train me just for me to leave for a new job after two months... it was a christmas job, it was less than a two month contract ha ha.

    Good luck!

Did you tell them you would be leaving? The role I've applied for is listed as temporary so I assume it will only be over christmas. I assume they wouldn't advertise and go through the process of interviewing if they didn't actually want to hire people because it was only short term.

Perhaps it was just an easy excuse?

I think it was an easy excuse, as soon as they found out I'd been to uni the tone of the whole interview changed. Nevermind, it wasn't a very good role for me (I have trouble standing for long periods). Apparently last year 1 in 5 christmas jobs were made permanent so that might be why?

    Anyway, again, GOOD LUCK!

I'd rather work at M&S than MrTs or AZda, good luck, hopefully it might become permanent.
  • just be calm, polite, friendly and don't be afraid to ask questions as it shows interest! good luck!

Well I got the job! :) I'm really happy, the trainer was a lovely woman and so was the woman who will now be my line manager. It's only contracted to 20 hours but she said they expect you to do at least 50% more of that in over time, plus extra where available and the possibility of being kept on sounds good because apparently there will be quite a few vacancies opening up in the new year.

It's going to be completely different to what I've been doing, which was nothing short of soul destroying.
