My class are planting some saplings on Thursday. Anyone got any ideas where I can get some v cheap or free tubes to protect them once planted?

Hello prettypennies
I'll move your thread to the 'Greenfingered' board.
Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere(please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email !!!!!!.

Hi, for small trees I've use 2 litre squash bottles (cut off top and bottom) stapled to wooden spikes instead of tree protectors until the saplings were about 45 cm tall. I'm not very green-fingered, so I don't know if I did the right thing but they did protect my little trees for a while and were free. Ive seen a plastic called Correx (or Coroplast or Coroflute, depending who you talk to!) used to protect trees. You can get it from the builders merchant as its used for under floor insulation. Travis Perkins keep it in stock."I'm not even supposed to be here today."0

thats what I was going to suggest.
providing the stakes are 4' ish tall they should be ok. The trees may need tieing to the post as they get taller, but you must remember to give them a bit more slack each year.
I have some links somewhere ...just going to find them..on another computer..
what do they need protecting from.....kids?0 -
FYI - they're called "Tewleys Tubes" (sp?)- after the bloke who invented them....I don't know how I know that - but I do! Most of them "unwind" as the saplings grow.0

Thanks for all your suggestions. After e-mailing several local charities and companies, a lovely lady from the YMCA got back to me offering us 35 for £8.70. They are the sort that unwind as the tree grows.
The children planted their trees today and really enjoyed it. Tommorrow we are going to attach the tubes to some bamboo steaks and pop them over the saplings.
The children are really looking forward to watching the trees grow.Twins, twice the laughs, twice the fun, twice the mess!:j:j0
