SNAD? Or my mistake?

Hi everyone! I've been lurking for a while but need some advice now so have finally registered to ask the experts here :)

I bought a paperback book on ebay last week and when it arrived, a large chunk of the pages (about half) weren't attached to the cover/other half of the book. There was nothing about this in the description (it was just the summary of the book from the back cover) but the condition was listed as good. Should I have expected this or is it SNAD? I'm not really sure what to do/how to mention this to the seller, or even if I should. I'm leaning towards sending a message asking if they were aware of it. What do you think?

Thanks

  • If you bought a book from Waterstones would you expect the pages to be loose or attached? If seller did not mention that the spine was broken (am presuming it is, from how you describe it) then I would contact the seller and if I got no joy from that, raise a SNAD dispute.

How do you want this resolved? If you raise SNAD then ebay will probably request that you send it back to the seller for a refund. If you do this please make sure you send it by a trackable method!
  • I think it's unlikely a seller would knowingly send a book in that state after listing its condition as "good", so it's probably happened in the post. How was it packaged? Many paperbacks are poorly bound, so a secondhand one sent in a Jiffy bag or other flexible packaging could be posted intact but damaged in the way you describe in transit. I think you can attach photos to messages to sellers now, so if you explain and show them the condition in which the book arrived, they might issue a refund without asking for it back (especially if it was cheap), but if not, you'll probably have to return it at your own expense.
