This is just standard business risk (and one that those who do not enjoy the cushion of benefits just factor into their business planning and operation). Dips in income, obligation to pay back loans, responsibility for staff - standard business operation.
True, but low profit businesses are able to operate - some of them at least - due to heavy subsidisation from the taxpayer. They don't just "enjoy" the cushion of benefits; their survival depends on it. Do I agree with that kind of business model? No. But I realise it's not so simple to extract oneself from an investment that is in part dependant on that subsidisation.0 -
Will self employed single parents be expected to work 35 hours per week in order to claim tax credits under UC?
I think that depends on the age of their children. So gainfully self employed means they have a viable business, but if they would not be required to work 35 hours a week due to the age of their children, presumably the MIF would only apply, in deeming income for benefit calculation purposes, for the hours they are expected to work.0 -
Depends on the age of the child. They'll still get the child related parts of the benefit with no conditionality...only part of the benefit will be affected. Will self employed single parents be expected to work 35 hours per week in order to claim tax credits under UC?:footie:
Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)
Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money.

With regard to your question of disability for WTC, I switched from the Support Group and was told on the phone by the Tax Credits person that I was classed as disabled. Presumably it was just being in the Support Group that decided this.
But you are right to be cautious as they are known to make mistakes! Perhaps others could advise of their experiences.
Very best of luck.0
