Diesels cost more to buy new, but tend to hold their value better. But typically you still need to be doing 10K+ miles pa to make one pay in say 3-4 years if buying new.
I run a diesel because I prefer the way they drive, not because of a fairly marginal running cost saving.No free lunch, and no free laptop

Yes- petrol. I've loved the feel of may last three BMW diesels; the flexibility and torque, the mid-range acceleration, the fuel economy and 'long-legged' low-rev high-speed cruising feel, but...
Having retired and changed to more short-range, town driving, having been scared by the DMF/DPF/Turbo failure stories (and having experienced turbo failure at 4-years/60,000miles), I've switched to petrol; £2-3k cheaper and I still get 40mpg on longer runs!
So it seems a no-brainer for my usage0
