Confused what to do about gas and electric

Hi all,

I'm just after a bit of advice regarding my gas and electric. I currently have my electricity with scottish power and I was £46 in credit on my last bill and I'm on the standard monthly direct debit plan paying £30 a month. I have my gas with british gas and I was in £126 debit on my last bill and think thats also the monthly direct debit standard tariff, I was paying £30 a month but they're increasing that to £54 as of next month. I live alone in a small two bedroom semi-detached.

I want to sort my tariffs out and combine both to one provider. I'm not particularly in a position to pay british gas what I owe them (£80 if you minus what I'm in credit with scottish power). I was just after some advice on my options regarding this? I get confused about all this utility stuff and rates etc so any advice would be very much appreciate.

Thanks, Emma.

Opting for gas and electricity from the same supplier is not always the cheapest option, and so I am a little confused why, for someone that is struggling to pay for what they have consumed, you would not be looking for the cheapest solution.

If you switch supplier, the current supplier will prepare a final bill which they would expect to be paid immediately (although they may accept a repayment plan from you)

£30 a month isn't much. You need to reduce your consumption considerably to get it down to £30 a month. Turn off the heating during the day and overnight and it should cut it down a bit. Set the thermostat as low as possible. Once the debt is paid back compare and switch.

:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p
