How do I find a counselor?

Can anyone advice me as where to go to find a counselor? can a doctor refer you to one or is it something you have to get the yellow pages out for?! Not for me but for a friend that has problems. Thank you.
If i helped in any way feel free to press thanks !

    Hi

Your friend could seek advice from their GP who would refer on to the practice counsellor if he/she thought it was the right course of action. However, this can take quite a while. The other option is to go private where you would indeed choose one from the yellow pages etc. If your friend could afford this I would ask my GP if he/she could recommend one.

    Best wishes

In Glasgow there are Women's Centres, and Church of Scotland places that have counsellor, they always tend to have a waiting list of a good few months.

Bacp are the main body for counsellors in the UK, so may be a useful place to search.

Try your local voluntary services, I once provided my services to my local one.
It will be free as the counsellors will be training (putting their new found skills to use, but fully competent).

Oh, and another thing, if your friend needs help because of a crime, she will not be able to use a counsellor until the case is over, as this may sway evidence, iyswim?

But her GP should be able to refer her if all else fails. (she may have a wait, wheras a drop in centre can be used straight away)
