20mm worktop thickness - possible?

Hi, we need to replace our tatty worktop in the utility room. It is 20mm thick and we need the new worktop to be this thick or less.

However, standard kitchen worktops seem to be about twice this thick. Does anyone have any ideas what we could use or where to look. It is just a worktop that goes over the washer and dryer is a platform for things like the cat's food, bed and some various bits and bobs.

So we don't need anything too fancy, just clean, tidy and durable.
Really grateful for help.

  • Similar problem myself. Try putting a wanted advert in you local Freecycle /Freegle asking if anyone is dumping old kitchen work surfaces . Put similar ad in a local news agents, and keep your eyes open if you drive around a local estate, for anyone with a skip , or signs of an old kitchen coming out. Worked for me. I havent checked, but Ive been told B&Q still stock the old types if you want to buy a whole length.
  • Im sure you could get a glass worktop at 20mm but its going to be expensive. Why cant it be any thicker?

You could always make it out of something like floorboards. You could get it looking pretty nice if done right

How about 3/4" exterior grade plywood? Marine grade would be better but a lot more expensive.

Properly finished, it could look very attractive. If you like wood.

You can get 18mm vinyl wrapped MDF from specialist suppliers.

  • Thank you all for your replies, this is very interesting.
The reason it can't be any thicker is that the current worktop is fitted right up against the window sill and directly ontop of the washing machine. If we had a thicker worktop it would partly overlap the window frame - not sure it this is possible/a good idea.

Phill 99 - can you suggest a supplier for the 18m mdf? Presumably this would be relatively strong?
    a6 windows - same question.

    Thanks!

Maybe this would work - supplied by Wickes £20.

    18mm White Furniture Panel 2790x600x18mm

Boards are edged on the two longest edges only to allow them to be cut to required length
Matching iron-on edging is available to provide a neat and professional finish
This thicker board (18mm) makes it suitable for heavy-duty shelving as well as bedroom wardrobe carcasses
    Melamine coated
    Forgotten but not gone.

Our German furniture supplier provides 10 and 17mm laminate worktops. I dont know if its possible to buy this on the open market. I haven't seen it anywhere.

Based on past experience, I wouldn't use that anywhere that may get damp. The edges are not sealed and the chipboard core swells up when water gets in.
