Not on electoral register.. credit card

Hi,

I applied for the barclays initial credit card a few days ago and was shocked to be declined as I have a reasonably good credit history and was sure I would meet the requirements for the card.

However I've realised I am not on the electoral register under the address I put on the application. (Recently moved from my parents and wasn't aware they had removed me from the register of the address)

Is it possible that I was declined as I was not on the register under the address I put on application? Also, would it have been possible for the credit agencies to actually credit check me at all seeing I am not on the electoral roll?

Answers and advice will be much appreciated.

Yes, forget applying when not on the electoral roll. And even after you are on it and it has been picked up by all of the CRAs, you will find it harder to get credit for the first 6 months because you haven't been at your current address for long enough and you are considered high risk
  • Cheers for that. So would the credit checks actually have gone though and show on my report, I'm worried the decline will have a bad effect on my rating

Yes because they ask for at least 3 years of addresses when you apply and they use these addresses and your name and date of birth to identify you. If you wait 6 months from now, the search you just did is unlikely to be considered negative so I wouldn't worry about it

The search will show on your report.

It doesn't show as a 'decline' to any other lender, just as a 'search'.

A single search is unlikely to have a significant impact on your ability to get credit elsewhere.

Just get yourself on the electoral roll asap!

The decline would not actually be stated as such on your credit report although it's possible that other organisations might see the search and notice that no new account had been opened and put two and two together.
