I believe that the Tesco recycling centres also take glass, so if you live within a short distance of one then it is worth saving your throw-outs to convert into points.
Just to be clear they only offer points for Alu cans, but the machine accepts all bottles, cans and jars.
    Nearly debt free
  • Thanks for all the replies folks. I'm pretty much resigned to the fact that I won't get much for it, and I didn't know that I needed to separate out aluminium cans from tin foil (thanks particularly for that), but I'm keeping all the metal we'd otherwise put into our household recycling bin and I'll let you know the outcome in late November, all being well.

Rather than weighing in cans to make a few bob why not re-model them. I saw an exhibition in our local museum once were cans had been made into ornaments and models, the guy had made houses; boats; motorbikes; people etc etc all sorts of craft things and was selling them.

  • Well it's been almost a year since I started this topic so finally, the big day for the weigh-in arrived this morning.

My excitement was palpable as I drove the eleven miles to our scrap yard and after the formal weighing in ceremony (13kg of aluminium, 13kg of steel), the final total was...

    ...£6.51.

The scrap man laughed, I laughed, and our recycling bin is going to start having metal in it from now on.

For interest, they took all the aluminium foil, cans and wine bottle caps in one go, no need to separate them out.

It was worth a try, but I consider the experiment a failure. I hope this is of interest to others in future.

If it was a one stop only journey and your car does 40 mpg, then you would have spent half of the money on fuel.
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales
  • Spot on. That's one of the reasons why I won't be bothering again.

You need to have a plumber or sparky friend or both, copper, lead and nickel are the best ones, if you're excluding the precious metals used in jewellery.
  • Never knew you could scrap them, i'm a recycler of my tins...
