ASUS EEE 1001px missing original setup CD? System 32 corrupt.

Hi,

my Asus EEE 1001px didnt come with an original setup CD.

I am getting a message that says

"windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:"
\windows\system32\config\system

"you can attempt to repair this file by starting windows setup using the original setup cd-rom.
Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair"

Can anyone suggest what I need to do? I'm lost without any CD. Plus it's a netbook so no CD-rom drive.

TIA.

F9 on boot up to get to the recovery partition - you can even download a copy of the OS

F9 have tried pressing repeatedly but nothing works - same message comes up alomst instantly as soon as I switch on.

F5 takes me to a menu of things... all of which take me back to the same error message.

Can anyone please tell me what I need to download and put onto USB in order to start the recovery?

Sorry I really have no clue what I am doing. I noticed for a few days before this error, the netbook was making a really weird squeaking sound. Could this be indicitive of another problem???

    thank you.

are you pressing F9 straight away

did you disable boot booster (F2) in the bios

does F8 bring up any options, safe mode etc, safe mode with command prompt

has the factory restore partition been wiped?

    which operating system

do you need to recover any data

Yes I am and still error comes straight up

did you disable boot booster (F2) in the bios

I am unsure what this bios thing means but when I press F2 it comes up. Boot Booster is shows as Enabled?

does F8 bring up any options, safe mode etc, safe mode with command prompt

    F8 brings up -
    safe mode
    safe mode with networking
    safe mode with command propmpt

    Enable boot logging
    Enable vga mode
    lask known good configuration
    Directory service restore mode
    Debugging mode
Disable automatic restart on system failure

    Start windows normally
    Reboot
    Return to OS choices menu

has the factory restore partition been wiped?
I have no idea. would this have been something I'd have done with my own knowledge? If so, then no, it has not

    which operating system
    windows XP

do you need to recover any data
No, just to get it working again would be good enough :)

F8. Choose Safe Mode With Networking or Last Known Good Configuration.

    Failing that.....

F2 into BIOS. Find Boot Booster and disable. Restart. Press F9 repeatedly.
How do I add a signature?

^:j This has done something. Brought up a screen saying do I need to back up any important data (which I don't) and now it's taken me to a Ghost32 11.0 thing with a progress indicator bar.

    Fingers crossed

backup with disk imaging to an external drive in future, then you won't lose any data

    http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.aspx

bios is a bit of code and settings that kickstart the machine into life before windows starts

you may possibly be able to get some data back by doing a recuva deep scan http://www.piriform.com/recuva after the factory restore has finished

I will do that, though luckily there was very little on it anyway, nothing of much importance as it's a secondary laptop.

All up and running again now -- thanks again everyone! Been trying all day to figure it out but clearly my knowledge is zilch :o

useful not just for data reasons, if the hard disk was to fail completely, the recovery partition would go too, a macrium backup would enable you to restore a fully working system to a new hard disk in around 10 minutes. A good idea on any machine - they can get corrupt at any time.
