getting soot smells when extractor in kitchen is on

Options
the extractor fan which is a 900mm in the kitchen extracts to the outside and is on the rear wall of the property.

the fireplace in the lounge chimney is on the side roof to the front of the property

sometimes when the extractor is on we get the smell of soot in the lounge but if the fire is lit there is no smell, the chimney was recently swept

the two do not connect in any way

could the extractor be taking so much air that it is effectively drawing the soot smell in

Sometimes age just shows up all by itself ;)

In the end, it's not the years in your life
that count....it's the life in your years :D

Of course it is. When you blow air from inside it has to be replaced by air from the outside. It will take the easiest path to get in. When the fire isn't lit, and all the doors and windows are shut, that is likely to be down the chimney.
