Delivery to Northern Ireland!

Trying to order a load of presents for Family for Christmas and get them sent to NI.
Tried to order with one online retailer who offer 'free UK delivery over £50!' - except when you try to check out with an NI address, they slap £14.70 on!!
NI is part of UK and if Royal Mail prices are the same for 'mainland' and NI, why the heck should retailers differentiate like this??
Looking around and they all seem to be doing it. Can't recall coming across this before when ordering online, is it a new thing or are they just hammering people as it's near Christmas?
Mad! Grrrr!

Are they using Royal Mail?0 -
I was going to ask the same. Maybe they use a different carrier for NI residents? Probably worth ringing the retailer tomorrow to ask.0

I know what you mean likelyfran,I was going to order something from The German Deli, about £15 worth of stuff, and the delivery charges to here (NI) was MORE than the cost of the order!0

I suspect the company is using a courier not Royal Mail. Let's face it, Royal Mail would charge more to deliver to Northern Ireland were they allowed to.0

Good point pmd, never thought about it like that! The advice I give on here is based on my many years in the preservation industry. I choose to remain anonymous, I have no desire to get work from anyone. No one can give 100% accurate advice on a forum if I get it wrong you'll get a sincere apology and that's all:D

To those who asked about Royal Mail, I have to assume the retailer is NOT using them as RM don't differentiate between 'mainland' UK and NI, so prices to post to both are the same.
Either that or they're trying it on.
I got a swift reply to my email to the retailer in question in which they said they 'can't offer free postage to NI as we get charged so much for deliveries over 2kg to there'. They agreed that they could probably explain deliveries better on their website.
I don't know, maybe they use the one courier for all their deliveries, maybe they'd be better switching to RM or maybe it's cheaper for them to use courier for 'mainland UK'?
Anyway, I went to a few different retailers for the same stuff in the end - all offering free postage to ALL of the UK.*Look for advice, not 'advise'*
