Kenwood Chef Arm Release Broken?

I have just aquired a Kenwood Chef (A701A - very old!) from Freecycle. It seems to work ok mechanically, just a bit noisy, but I cannot get the arm to raise up to enable the attachments to be attached.
I've tried pulling/pushing the silver button on the side as much as I can by and and with some pliers but it's not budging. Should I try whacking it with a hammer?! Or try something else?
Many thanks for any suggestions!
