You do not need AOL software to access the internet.
Post the make/model of the router (the box the ethernet cable from your desktop PC plugs into) and someone will advise whether it has wifi built-in.
If it has wifi, then you can connect the new laptop wirelessly (you may need to enable wifi on the router first), otherwise your options are to connect the new laptop to router with an ethernet cable (plug it in and you'll be connected within seconds) or to obtain* a new router with wifi built in (virtually all modern routers have).
* You may be able to get a free upgrade modem by talking to your internet service providerHow do I add a signature?0
