Kobo v Kindle

Options
My wife is interested in buying one of these, but we know nothing about them. We have looked at both and the Kobo is tipping it for us at the moment, but could someone with a bit of know on these give us their opinion please.

I just bought a Kobo ereader touch from Viking for just £65.5 for my parents as a Christmas gift. Though it doesn't' have features like Kindle but is simple & compact. My parents love reading so its just wonderful.

    Hope they like it :)

I have a Kindle (a fairly old one now) and I love it. Not sure about Kindle Fire, etc - it seems more like they're going for a tablet than an e-reader with that one, but as far as older Kindles go I'd highly recommend them :)

I went with the Kindle. I like the fact you can read it in the sun and no glare. Dont know if the other makes do this. Mine is an older one with the keyboard on the front. Downloads books in seconds and Amazon have lots of books to choose from. Each day they have one at 99p and lots of free ones. I did not think I'd like the kindle as like having an actual book, but do now prefer it.

I think Which did a compare and contrast on this and with a few other tablets too. I think to be honest it depends on what your needs are and what you value and so on.

There are a few more articles on the website if you look via the search box at the top right hand side of the screen.

Personally I'd want to go to a shop and try each out myself to see how they look and feel before I made a choice. If your near a fairly big town with a fairly big Waterstones or John Lewis, Currys, Selfridges...etc and so on where they may have these models out on display to test I'd recommend trying them out first.

I don't have either by the way!
  • Kindle more choice Kobo is more limited I believe in buying any book I like on amazon and do but kobo seems limited to popular and literary.

I chose 12 titles that I have read and enjoyed over the last couple years. I looked them up on Amazon and Kobo stores. 11 existed on both. One didnt exist on either. Titles were fractionally cheaper on Amazon.Overall the Kobo has it for me. Spec is perfect. Ive seen both and cant split them. Amazon lock you in to their store. I dont like that. Amazon wont let other ereaders buy from their store. I dont like that either. So I wont be backing an Amazon product this time.

I have both (don't ask!) and I prefer the Kindle, purely because I find it easier to navigate. Like the feel of it better than the Kobo too.

I quite like the Kindle range. Particularly the new one - Kindle Fire HD. But it depends on what you mainly need it for really.

I have the kobo and love it, the benefit of the kobo for me is that you can buy books from whsmiths and waterstones (among others) using gift cards, whereas as far as I know the only place you can officially buy books for kindle is from amazon.

Also with the kobo you can borrow books for free from elibrarys, which has saved me a fortune on books since I've owned my ereader.

I have the Kindle and I love that I can use it outside in the summer (when we get one) without having to worry about any glare on the screen.

I currently have 600 books on my Kindle (including cookery, travel and other non-fiction) and I have not paid a penny for any of them.

I get an email each day from freekindlebooks@ereaderiq.co.uk where I can choose from around 1000 books. It's true that a lot of them are mediocre but some have been excellent and anyway, if I don't like them they're easily deleted.

I'm not keen on what I've seen of the Kindle Fire but then I have a tablet and only wanted the Kindle for reading books. I also prefer the older one to the new one with bright white 'paper' as I think it's easier on the eyes.
I let my mind wander and it never came back!
