Company will pay for car insurance.

You will lose NCB entitlement - after two years most insurers will disregard your ncb.

You may find employer will have an alternate, i.e. where they give a generous allowance for you to buy/lease your own car.

so i could for example keep my little old 1.0 corsa and keep it insured to keep my ncb whilst i have a company car or sell it and get my self a sporty little number for the weekends

Buy a little cheap sporty number. Insure it for a week to take advantage of the summer :)

Then cancel the policy and receive another proof of no claims.

If you have a partner with a car then each insure the car in your name for alternate years, then you both keep your NCD; but be sure to be truthful about who owns the car and who's the main driver, when getting insurance.

Many insurers will recognise NCB from somebody leaving a company car scheme.

No need to keep a car you won't use.

That said, many employers will offer a cash alternative to a company car and let you ake your own arrangements.
