The first problem is the WIFI on Windows Phone turns off when its locked:

They'll be an option in Windows 8 to prevent this. Shame Orange customer support staff cannot tell customers about this.

So why don't I get a data plan? I did - Orange says it will only kick-in on the 8th December - which simply is not good enough.

Phone is faulty anyway is it does not keep the correct date and time - I was told this was normal. Orange customer support staff are patronising, don't know their product and quite possible, tell little lies.

So it's going back. I'll have to pay since it has not been confirmed as faulty, but I really can't be bothered, it will be cheaper than spending the £20 every 6 days on credit until the 8th.

Bye Orange, as a customer of 10 years, you really don't care do you. It's what Mr Lewis says all the time though, you don't get anything for being a loyal customer.

On the same settings screen there is a mobile data option, just slide the slider to off. I always leave mine off unless i want to go online. It saves the battery and your credit. :)

You can download tiles from the marketplace which allow you to pin icons to the home screen for easy on and off. I use the wifi tile and the mobile data one. Just do a search or look at the top list of tools. Its a free one.

I wrote a letter to Orange, and they credited my account for the cost of phone credit I lost and the return postage cost of the phone, stating I'd get the money when I close the account.

Phoned up today, and told that is not possible. I can either lose that credit or use it on phone calls.

Why does that not surprise me? Time for another letter, at least they read theirs unlike T-Mobile.
  • I have had the same problem this week with a samsung galaxy PAYG phone. The £10 Orange credit went within ten minutes while i was looking around the phone controls. I didn't go online or phone anywhere. The phone itself was so new it did not even seem to know its own number at that point. I did notice that something went into update mode though. I assumed 3g access had done this as my home wifi was not switched on. Looking on the internet i found a suggestion to switch off "packet data" in the mobile network settings and that the phone maker has built the phone to always give priority to 3g over wifi. As i only ever intended to use wifi at home or hotspots i did switch off the packet data option. I have since used wifi at several hotspots and gps with no extra charges. Looking since at my orange account i could see that the GPRS ap-prepaidsessio items that caused this seem to have actually used little data but at disproprtionate cost that does not seem to match the usage pricing rates. I also don't allow data roaming as i suspect it uses the battery.
