can my wife transfer a balance from a card in my name to one in hers?

Hi.
We have a large debt on a credit card in my name. Can my wife take out a 0% card and transfer the balance to it?

Yes they transfer to the account you state.

But only if you are allowed, for example I can't transfer Halifax to Halifax, or Aqua to Halifax (as they are the same banking group)

Ok thank you so should be ok to do a transfer to a card in my wife's name from mine. But not say Barclay to Barclay.

Yes, but do watch out as assj says, you can't transfer between card that are issued by the same banking group.

For instance MBNA issues cards for Virgin and several others. HSBC backs the M&S card.

The name issue shouldn't be a problem, because normally they just want the card number and expiry date.

She can but then the debt is 100% hers and if the worst happens then she is the one that has to repay it, the fact it came from your card is irrelevant.

You need to check the terms carefully.

For example santander DOES NOT allow BTs from anyone other than the original cardholder.

And remember what others have stated above. Every week here there are posts from people who have transferred debts from other people onto their card and then been saddled with it; so you also need to look at WHY you have a card balance at an expensive interest rate, and address those issues.
