Best browser for comping?

I'm having issues with IE which is the only browser I've ever used, I want to try another but don't know which one.
Which one would you advise and why? Are there any functions that will make comping faster/easier?

TIA

I changed from IE to Firefox and find it a lot better. IE used to freeze up on me quite frequently. I still have to use IE for the odd comp on sites that don't seem to like Firefox though.

  • I've been messing about with browsers over the last few days. I used to use IE8 or 9 all the time, but I'm now finding that Chrome works faster. I didn't like Firefox.
  • I've used Firefox for a long time, it works well with most comps.

Occasionally I have to switch to Chrome for some FB Apps that won't load properly in Firefox.

    I like Chrome because

    a) it is reliable
    b) it is fast
    c) it self updates without you noticing anything.
    d) the layout for bookmarks is excellent
    e) It typically uses a larger area of your screen for webpages.
    f) It is easily set to delete all cookies on closing - and it does delete them all (unlike several others)

The auto-complete is better than IE except for its infuriating tendency to convert all phone numbers to international format replacing the first 0 with 44, although if you use roboform you can turn auto-complete off.

I would advise EVERYBODY to have at least 2 browsers on their computers. If one browser fails totally, and you only have one, you can't get online to download a replacement, and I have seen this happen several times. If you have, for example, both Chrome and IE, then if one fails you simply download and install it again using the other one to get online.

Thank you! I'm going to play around with a few and see which one I like best!
Anything has got to better than IE at the moment, it is very sloooow and keeps opening up multiple pages of things after I have closed them down, which are then impossible to close!

    Thanks once again. x

I've just switched to chrome from FF and loving it. I've managed to set it up with an extension called clumplinks so I can open loads of comp tabs at once in one click - typically 40-80, so by using shortcut keys, such as Ctrl & W to close a tab to close it when I'm done, I'm whizzing through the comps now, its a lot faster then IE or FF when doing this.

I've set up roboform to work smoothly and also gone into properties and secured it, so promoters don't see I come from this site when entering comps.

There is a couple of comps I have problems with - the radio ones in particular, but I keep ff as a back up so all good!

How do you secure it so people don't see where you are coming from Babs?

I've never liked IE, I think it is buggy, laggy and very unstable.

For my general web browsing I use Chrome, I love the settings and the speed of it. But for comping I use FF because I tend to open a ton of comp tabs at once, usually 50+, and Chrome opens up a new process for each tab you open, which can make it run slow if you're opening a lot. In FF you don't get this, which makes it perfect for comping :)

I've seen a lot of people that say they open up lots of tabs a once, why is this? in what way does it make things quicker/easier?
That's a genuine question by the way-not a dig lol! I'm trying to improve my comping efficency and need all the hints and tips I can get:D
I currently go down the thread opening 1 post at a time and opening the link from there before closing it and moving on to the next one.

This is how - this is for windows, not sure how you would do it on a Mac

    1) Right click on your "Chrome" icon [either on your Desktop or your Taskbar]
    2) Choose properties
    3) At the end of your target line, place these parameters:
    --no-referrers
    4) Click OK

    e.g. "C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe" --no-referrers

NOTE: The --no-referrers option will only work when you open Chrome from the icon you modified. It is best if you modify both the Desktop shortcut AND Taskbar shortcut.

IMPORTANT: Make sure you look at the example above closely. If your path contains spaces then it MUST be encapsulated with " ". There MUST be a single space between the end of your path and --no-referrers. Notice that --no-referrers has two minus symbols in front of it, contains two r's and ends with an s. If even one small typo is made then it won't work
