If you want heat reduction but still want good daylight, then you are probably better off with either venetian or vertical blinds. In a way vertical are more suitable in a south facing room because you can have them slanted to sheild the sun from which ever angle it's at. At the same time you have plenty of light coming in & can see out, so less of a claustrophobic effect than pulled down roller blinds would give.

With venetians if you go for a medium to dark wood, the room ends up with a much darker hue than a light coloured wood gives, so bear this in mind. If wood isn't your style, then go for a metal venetian as opposed to the plastic ones that are on the market.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

    Hi

I am in the same situation and I have vertical blinds. As said, they can be opened to shield the glare of the sun, (they are easy to wash too!)

I would not personally use a metal venetian, as if there was a fire they would block a possible escape route as they would attract the heat and you would have a battle trying to escape. (a far fetched scenario, I know, but I was offered this advice and it has put me off them).

Not sure of cost comparison here but a couple of years ago we had a special film put on the inside of our patio doors and daughter's bedrooom to cut down the glare and heat from the sun as we're in the same position as you wish sun on the back of the house from midday onwards and the rooms get unbearably hot! Also the carpet was completely bleached out in the living room where the sun had got to it!!

If I remember rightly there are different 'strengths' to cut down UV light and therefore different levels of tint. Initially I wished I hadn't had it done because it does make the glass appear slightly darker and at night the patio doors are like mirrors!! But in the long run it's been a good move, especially for DD bedroom. You sort of get used to it.

Just thought it might be another option but as I said I'm not sure of cost.

BTW we got a local window/glass company in to do the job and they were very good.

We have wooden venetians in our house, we like them because they are very flexible as to how much light you want in the room. Roller blinds are only up or down. There are lots of lovely wooden blinds around at the moment, I know some people like verticals but I've always thought them a bit clinical.(personal choice not intended to insult anyone).

I don't know if you're near an Ikea as there's are very reasonable. I wouldn't worry too much about the safety of metal venetians, they are not that strong.
