I've been running my broadband through the landline, but the time has come to go wiFi (because I want to get an Amazon Kindle Fire for my son's xmas pressie and we need WiFi)
SO, I know I need a "dongle" for the pc but which one do you recommend - I've read loads of reviews and every one seems to have issues. I don't want issues on Christmas morning when the Fire goes out (well, doesn't start - you know wht I mean)

SO any help advice please

  • Is you PC a desktop and is it connected to your router by an Ethernet cable or USB.

I presume that you mean your broadband is via your telephone line? In this case you do not need a wifi dongle for your PC. What you need is a router that has wifi or to enable wifi on your existing router. First thing to o is find the model number for your router(or broadband modem) and decide if it is a router and has wifi.
After this you will e able to decide how to go forward.

Who is you broadband provider? How long have you been with them, are you in or out of contract? Do you want to stay with them?

Loads of questions, but it will help people to advise you.

a wireless router also has wired ethernet ports, which can be plugged into the pc (assuming it has a network card), meaning you don't need a wireless dongle unless the pc is moving far away from the router

if you don't have a wireless router, ask your isp for a free one

Your router already has wireless built in. You need to connect it up to your phone line with the supplied cable, then to your PC by ethernet, log into the router interface, and enter your broadband username and password. That will give you your internet connection.
Then connect your wireless devices to it by entering the wireless encryption key into each device.
Are you not already using the router though? If you are, just connect your Kindle wirelessly as above. Log into the wireless page on the router interface if you have problems.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • Hi

    Check this out

If your PC already connects by a cable, then you don't need to change that. However, if your PC is a laptop and you want to go wireless then you may need a wifi dongle if it hasn't got one already.

Follow the instructions to see if wifi is set up on your router, you kindle will connect to this.

I'm not criticising, but post more information when you need help, an remember that google is really good for finding answers
    Good luck

    As explained in the manual:

    With an Ethernet cable

Follow these steps to use the network cable to connect the router to your computer.

plug the Ethernet cable into any of the 4 available Ethernet ports on the router.

Plug the other end of the Ethernet cable into your computer’s Ethernet port.

An Ethernet status light on the front of the router will now light up.

As has already been said you don't need a dongle. Read macmans reply.

It looks like closed is adding to his too as I type.
  • A couple of relatives have those Plusnet routers.

    Instructions:- https://www.plus.net/support/hardware/thomson585web.pdf

If you installed it as it came to you, the router is currently producing WiFi.

When you try a WiFi device you will find a network with Plusnet and some numbers in the name. Connect to that and enter the key printed on the router.

I can't quite remember what they call it but as I remember there are a few numbers and it is the bottom one on the sticker.
  • I think you are confused. If you have the router you say, and if this is already setup and connected to your PC, then you do not need to do anything.
A wired connection is usually quicker and more. Reliable than. Wireless. So keep the wired connection for your PC. Use wireless for wifi devices (like the kindle you mention).
