Black gloss kitchen, white gloss or wood??

We are in the middle of decorating our new house and are really struggling to decide on a kitchen. In our previous two houses we went for wood shaker, the first one was from Ikea, was dark wood and I loved it; the second was from B & Q was a lighter oak wood and I absolutely hated it and so we thought in our new house we would def go for a walnut shaker style kitchen.
Alas everywhere we go it is gloss, white, black, purple, red etc. We found a walnut style shaker and got a design done and as we were leaving the shop noticed a gorgeous black gloss.
So we decided we would go for the black gloss but everyone is telling us oh you will see every mark, it will be a nightmare to keep clean especially with a 3 and 5 year old. So we thought oh well maybe white gloss but I really had my heart set on the black, I think it will look lurvely in my new kitchen but now hubby is panicking thinking it will be a nightmare to clean etc which will make me a monster as I will moan constantly about it!!!
Help - anyone have any experience of black gloss kitchen (esp with kids) and should we/shouldn't we?

The biggest advantage of any gloss kitchen is that, whilst it will show dirt more, it is very easy to clean. 99% of the time a damp cloth is all that is needed to clean it, or even a lot of the time an E-cloth will do the trick.
The other 1% of cleaning is with soapy water, never anything abrasive. If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

I had a nice new white kitchen last year and because everyone said, it will show every mark i went for the matt.
Trust your instinct because I really, really wish I had gone for the gloss even thugh it was 30% more expensive.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
ive had black paired with ivory with walnut tops and yes it does show up more but was 10 min wipe over.
That was 4yrs ago, black could date rather quick now, look at an anthricite/grey/ gloss, still shows marks and still wipe away easy.
We have a bespoke metallic gloss handleless at the min, and does show up marks but not that bothered as easy to wipe and we have young twins.
A decent Matt (none vinyl texture) lacquer, could also be an option, will look good show less marks (fingerprints) and wipe down as easy as gloss0 -
Hi , I had a black gloss and zebrano high gloss kitchen : I have a 3 and 2 year old and I doing it really easy to clean , and it didn't show up every mark .... Obviously it's prone to smears after wiping down but nothing window cleaner doesn't polish out. I loved it and the high gloss reflects the light so the room didn't look as dark as you'd expect with a black kitchen0

An all black gloss kitchen will date very quickly i would imagine. If you're spending a lot of money, i'd go for something simple or mix gloss and matt units together. If i was buying a house, a black gloss kitchen would put me off.0

Unless you have the money to change your kitchen on a whim be careful and get something that is well built, easy to keep and won't look absurd in 5-6 years time.0

Remember black will suck light out of your kitchen. Not a problem if lots of natural light. We have a smallish kitchen with limited light so black would have been like cooking in a box. Even changing from wood to the gloss cream we have now made a massive difference to light.
Having said this if you start to hate the colour you can always change the doors.I'm retiring at 55. You can but dream.0 -
Thanks everyone for all your advice. We have decided to go with white gloss units with a dark wood effect worktop and a dark wooden effect laminate flooring to match. Well that's the plan today!
Thanks again :O)0 -
