Battery Hen Welfare Trust

Hi,
I am the Rescue Coordinator for the above registered charity on the Isle of Wight.
We rescue and rehome ex battery hens who are considered spent in terms of egg production by the farmer.
We support British Farming and want to see increased support for British Free Range Farmers to then see the diminishing sales of eggs from caged hens.
We work with the farmers and a lot of them support our work, we would like to see them moving toward more welfare friendly methods of farming.
There are 20 million hens in battery cages in this country alone at any one time!
We now have Rescue Coordinators located nationally, all of whom work as volunteers and have great compassion for the humble battery hen. We rescue hens at point of slaughter, with the agreement of the farmer, and retire them to pet homes.
WE UNDERTAKE OUR WORK WITH THE COOPERATION OF THE EGG INDUSTRY AND LIAISE WITH THE STATE VETERINARY SERVICE ON MATTERS OF BIOSECURITY.

Each hen has lesss than the size of an A4 sheet of paper to live in. She lives like this for a year, being pecked by her cage mates and not having a nest to lay her eggs in. She never sees the sun, never has a dustbathe, never has the opportunity to perch, to grub in the ground for worms or to enjoy the green grass.

YOU can help make difference and take a hen out of her cage without having to home one to your garden even. We want to inspire you to take responsibility for the food you eat -
DID YOU KNOW that many everyday processed products contain eggs from caged hens - pasta, mayo, salad cream, some ice cream and some chocolates, quiches and cakes. By making a few simple adjustments to your shopping YOU can be directly responsible for helping to release a battery hen from her cage.

BATTERY HENS EXIST BECAUSE WE DEMAND CHEAP FOOD!

If you can offer a home to a hen or 4, or you wish to sponsor a hen for yourself or someone else you can find contact details at our website as well as info on how else you can help with regard to donations and changing your buying habits.

THANK YOU for reading! :)

Oh what a coincidence I was on that site this morning as I am hoping to have 4-6 chucks as pets in the garden.

Just out of curiosity would a 6x4 shed converted be ok as a house and what would would the best size run be?

I am a total novice with a love of hens but I have a very limited budget so I am avoiding the sites which advertises hen houses at £7-800 or more!

Any advice you can give would be great if you wouldn't mind?

edited to add that I have a space for a run of about 12-14ft x 6ft is this large enough? The hens would be let out in the day for a scratch around etc
Wife to a great husband and mum to 4 fantastic kids 9,8,4,3 they drive me mad but I would do anything and give everything for my family :grinheart
  • I just spoke to a lovely lady called Jean in Essex this morning about adopting 3 chickens, she was really helpful.

I am buying an Eglu from http://www.omlet.co.uk

They are about £360 without the chickens and if you call them and ask if they have any reconditioned ( basically brand new but have a few scrathes on them during assembley) for £40 off !!
