A 1st or a 2:1 in any subject will be worth more than a 3rd (or a fail/drop-out) in a specific subject for many careers , and whilst some degrees might seem more appropriate to come careers, it's not necessarily so.

    e.g
Government Accountants:- any degree at 2:2 as a minimum
    http://www.thegfp-treasury.org/finance/graduate_recruitment.aspx

Law Profession:- takes 1 year extra for non-law degrees than for law degrees (or the same if you have to re-take a year of your law degree).

It would make sense to think carefully about the balance between the likely achievement and the potential for employment as interacting factors.

Both of the above examples quoted are minimum requirements and probably theoretical. I doubt very much whether a person getting a good degree in media studies, drama and the like would stand a cat in hell's chance of getting a job as a professional in law or accountancy.

As it happens my son did a degree in accountancy and eventually worked for a Big 4 firm of international accountants. That process involved 4 interviews and various intelligence tests. He confirmed my view that nobody with totally unrelated degrees worked in his firm as they were looking for mainly Maths, Accountancy, Statistics and Business degrees.

My wife is a teacher and in that profession there are many with degrees in all subjects but not everyone wants to be a teacher.

My original point is that vocational degrees are more valuable especially since the cost of studying has become excessive. In that context one should question whether "fringe" or even many traditional degrees are worth the bother and huge financial sacrifice given the high number of people with degrees without careers who find themselves working for minimum wage in companies such as the large supermarkets.
Take my advice at your peril.
  • £100,000 tops. Probably realistically £75k minimum if you want to clothe them, send them skiing with their friends, trekking round South America in Summer, few nights in Ibiza etc, fund a car etc etc . Depends what their life style at home is and if you want to maintain it or if you want to do basics only I imagine. So if you fly abroad 1st class 5 times a year will you want the same for them?

Top uni probably means Russell Group . My lovely child probably costs me about £25k a year (being really honest ) with train fares, holidays, car insurance, fees, living costs, clothes, book account etc . Northern is cheaper than Southern .

Being positive. It's a lot less than boarding school but not as cheap as prison.

7-8 K pre annum, 10K per annum in london. This is living costs incl books.

But I have one who just started Law at Warwick, so book costs are higher than many courses. So this will affect your budget ie what course you study.
