Mine in this house came off with a pallet knife. Then had plastering done. Plasterers are dirt cheap. 16ft by 20 ft room ceiling only £200 mAx? No mess (except lots of bits of polystyrene ) bringing them down. Took an nourish per room to get them down. onl 1 had a bad cueing underneath- that was boarded And plastered for about £400.

Every ceiling in our house was covered in poly tiles and until you get thrm down its difficult to see whats underneath and what needs to be done.
they will come off fairly easily you just really need to find one in the corner and go from there, something like a wallpaoer scraper might help you hook them down.
Then it was for us a case of bagging them in black bin liners and either taking them to the tip or popping a few bags out each week with the rubbish.
I am a complete diy novice and to be honest it was a job that I did and it gave me a lot of satisfaction, really easy to do and in my opinion really not wort paying someone else to do it!
Once the tiles are off then you will be able to see the condition of the ceilings underneath, our plasterer looked at ours and was happy that all they required was a skim....to put your quote into perspective our plasterer has skimmed every wall and ceiling in our property for £1650 so yoour quote seems a liitle steep in my mind for just the ceilings unless they are in a very bad state.frugal October...£41.82 of £40 food shopping spend for the 2 of us!

Thats not always the case...back in the 70's believe it or not people put the tiles up because they were fashionable not necessarily to hide anythingfrugal October...£41.82 of £40 food shopping spend for the 2 of us!

Unless you either have a serious issue with ceiling height, or the house is already empty and stripped back completely, I wouldnt take it down. Just board over, you will be losing bout 5cm of height. And if you don want to lose all of that, skim off the tiles And then board and only waste 2-3cm. The mess just isn't worth it. We did take some down as we gutted our house, but I would never do it if living there. I have a blog (you can see it via my profile), look back to last year, October time I think, pics and video of the mess. Not good.
Good luck!0
