Possessions insurance in shared flat

Options
I've just moved to a new flat in London and like most young people living and working in London, I share this flat with two other people (a friend and someone we found through spareroom.co.uk, both in permanent jobs). I want to insure my belongings but it's tricky to do so in shared accomodation and I wanted your help.

I was previously insured for contents with Barclays but when I moved to this new flat, they cancelled my policy as I'm not covered if I'm living with people that I'm not related to or in a relationship with. I was annoyed at this and tried to find new possessions or contents insurance but many insurers don't cover you in these kind of situations.

I don't own that much but enough to be difficult financially to replace if it all got stolen or damaged. Not getting an insurance policy would also leave me without legal liability insurance.

I want a good deal but so far I've only found out that HSBC have some possessions insurance, once I'd phoned them, Endsleigh and RBS also have some. I've heard mixed reviews with Endsleigh, that they are not very good at paying out if there's trouble so I'm not very keen on them.

Is there a good comparison website or another online resource that has an overview of all the different insurers that cover people living in shared accomodation? There's millions of us in London, I saw in the papers this week, so there must be plenty of companies covering these kind of situations?

Thanks for any help you can give!

Personal Possessions Insurance is widely available. Just do a search and you will find many options. Try a local broker and they will have options available.
The comments I post are personal opinion. Always refer to official information sources before relying on internet forums. If you have a problem with any organisation, enter into their official complaints process at the earliest opportunity, as sometimes complaints have to be started within a certain time frame.
  • I know that there's plenty personal possessions insurance out there but that tends to be for valuables both inside away from the home. I want to insure my contents, including thinks like books and clothing, rather than the phone and laptop I take out of the house.
