Student finance and a larger debt under a suspension or to officially leave (and claim JSA from January) and re-apply for 2013

    1. She wouldn't go to the jobcentre anyway, she would phone 08000556688 and make a new JSA claim or claim JSA online. To claim JSA she would need a letter from the Uni that she has left her course, (I don't know if "suspended" would qualify, but I'll go along with others who say it would not be enough). She would not get any JSA for any period which her student maintenance loan has covered her for. If she got a loan in September that presumably covers her till April 2013 ? You could ask Student Finanace England or SAAS (if Scotland) (don't know the Welsh one) for the answer.

As someone said, she is now possibly making the householders/Landlord liable for council tax.....but if she is still classed as a student for being "on suspension" then surely this would not be the case, so would be best to seek clarification from the council tax dept.

    2. If she signs on the JSA, whether she gets JSA payments or just gets NI credits, she will have to sign off for the holiday and make a rapid reclaim when she comes back to UK.

    3. They do generally give claimants who have their signing day during the holiday period a exemption from signing, so she could find herself with 4 weeks "off" in which case, there would be no harm in coming 'home' for xmas. But she should ask her advisor for written instruction that she should not return to sign on the next 2 weeks, but to only come back to sign after 4 weeks.... because too many times advisors get it wrong and the claim gets closed because the claimant does not sign on after 2 weeks. A lot of claimants due their signing cycle will not get a xmas 4 week signing holiday.
