Smoking Breaks....How many?

I would say none!Beancounter wrote: »How many smoking breaks would most people regard as acceptable during a 8 hour day outwith the usual tea and lunch breaks?
I ask as I work in a team of 2, someone new started 2 weeks ago and I counted 10 smoke breaks today, the last of which was 5 minutes before the end of the day. Meanwhile muggins here has to deal with customers, take phone calls etc.
Having lost my mum to cancer just a few weeks ago I am not exactly a fan of smoking or smokers but respect their right for a break whilst not exactly agreeing with it but this woman is just taking the mickey.
Smoking at my old company was banned in works time and you were only allowed to smoke in a lunch break. If you were going to the bank say with some bankings on company time and seen to be smoking it was a sackable offence.
Also where I worked 12 years ago we only had a 30 min lunch break and those who took smoking breaks never got the lunch break and had to work it.0 -
I do not believe people should be allowed extra breaks for smoking, and I am a smoker.Right to a break? If I was an employer I would ban any smoking whilst in uniform or smelling of smoke whilst dealing with customers.
I trust you would also ban eating smelly foods? There is nothing worse than coffee breath!0 -

I haven't spoken to the boss about it yet, there are some other issues I have to address re my colleague as she is in my opinion, not pulling her weight anyway. Seems to spend more time upstairs or emailing friends than actually working.
I did mention it to my supervisor before leaving tonight and we are going to discuss it on Monday. Could be interesting!!!0 -
I am sorry for your loss of your mum x0

Blimey even when I've worked at places where they didn't mind you popping out if it was quiet I don't think I ever managed that many. As others have said have a word with your manager although I would just say they are spending a lot of time away from the desk rather than specifying that they are smoking."It's nice to be important but it's more important to be nice." :T0 -
Blimey that is a lot of fag breaks
In my last job i used to get one, and even then i thought that was very generous, i never actually expected any (and in previous jobs i only went on designated breaks). Sounds like they are taking the proverbial, and that's not really fair on the others who have to pick up the slack. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. Yes, if a worker smelled or anything that was not 'medical' then I would ask them to sort it out. Of course it depends on the role, if it is a building merchant the smell of BO is unavoidable, Topman, less so.0 -
When i smoked I had 3 cigs in my working day and one or two of those were in my lunch break. I stopped two weeks ago and now 'smoke' my e-cig in the office and or in the corridor.
My place of work is very relaxed and I could have easily had more smoke breaks but would feel guilty going out for even one on works time. We are allowed to enjoy a coffee and a natter as often as we wish as long as the work gets done and the phone is answered.0 -
I'd be very tempted to speak to management about arranging to take paid breaks of the same amount of time during the day too. (but then I've never been the quiet type..)
I don't have anything against smokers personally but if someone is getting an hour or so extra breaks I want mine too thanks!0
